We used to use slate for arrowheads and tomahawks when I was a kid. I don't know how effective they were against reindeer, but they were crap against a wall or pavement.

I saw some of those slate points in the museum in Oslo. They are seriously big and heavy so they were clearly shooting some powerful bows.
