D-Cell Mag-lite L.E.D. Conversion

I've done it and it's fine. As you say it's mostly just a bulb swap. Although to me it didn't seem as bright as the old krypton bulb; just less battery draining.

I agree with santaman. We used to be issued the 3 d cell ones, and swopped the bulb to led, but this did'nt give us the depth of field for a longer beam. We carry an led(mine an issue lenser torch)as belt carry, but the bigger mags are better for searching with, plus its big, heavy & in your hand when you need it, as some times you don't have time to draw a baton.
Not tried a 2cell, but my protec m25 tac bag has a side pocket to fit one..

I've got a couple of 2D maglites that I upgraded using the nite-ize bulb conversion. Agree with everything said in the earlier posts. Actually compared the both one evening and found the krypton bulb penetrated further and gave a more precise beam, the LED obviously gives a whiter light.

Plus, you don't have to fill out a use of force form with a maglite, as it's not listed as a tactical option...

the best maglite upgrades I have found are these terralux ones. either a 140 lumen upgrade for 2-6 cell torches or a massive 700 lumen for the 4-6 cell ones.

I have the 140 lumen one and its great; just swap the bulb for the upgrade led bulb and its good to go. beam focus and flood functions just same as original incandescent bulbs. the beam throw is much improved and battery life is massively prolonged.

I'm going to get the 700 lumen one next.

I paid extra for an upgrade that said it kept the zoom focus option. It didn't. No change in beam spread, and I found the led moved around and kept going out. I went back to the krypton bulb, and considered the upgrade a waste of money.

I've made some adaptors so I can power my 2D Maglite on AA batteries - much lighter and with the LED conversion lasts well too

There are afew sellers on ebay. The 140 lumen bulb is generally £15 and the 700 lumen bulb is just under £50.

I think you can also get them from dedicated torch websites too

If you are contemplating converting an existing maglite (I have), buy a brand new LED 2 D cell for £20 delivered instead of spending £15 on a bulb. The maglite LEDs are just as good.

Are we in danger of descending into torch pron here? Are people using these torches to navigate at night/lamp bunnies or just for use around the camp? A cheap light torch will be adequate for the latter and won't destroy your night vision as effectively as something akin to an arc welder!

Spandit makes a very valid point, but I suppose it depends how you use the torch (and how you feel about pron:)).

I think it's difficult to have too many torches, so I bought a LED Maglite in Lidl for 22 quid. It has only one setting, about 120 lumens. Most of the time I don't use it because it's too bright. It's less than a quarter of the weight of my 50Watt Clulite but easily as bright. Yes the Maglite beam is adjustable, but IMO from that point of view it isn't as good as the incandescent ones. When you really want a floodlight, it actually makes a hole in the middle of the beam.

If I want to see why the dogs are barking then switching it on can be calculated to surprise, and as has been mentioned it would make a pretty good peacekeeper, but apart from that it's more likely just to interfere with my night vision. This is especially true if for example I'm in a wood, which I often am. The beam will occasionally play on something very close, and light scattered back at close range from e.g. an overhanging branch can be absolutely blinding if you happen to be looking straight at it.

Some of those upgrades look expensive. I definitely wouldn't splash out on the LED upgrade if it cost nearly as much as a new torch. I'd buy another torch, and probably some rechargeable batteries. Having said that I think I've had the LED Maglite for over a year, and with just occasional use not yet had to replace the batteries.

I have a standard AA maglight with the LED conversion using RED LEDs, this doesn't take out my night-sight and was reletively low cost at the time, as for light output, I really only use it to illuminate just a metres in front as the eyes get accustomed to the darkness and its amazing how much you can see, so large output is not really needed.

I thought this way too when I was younger. Still agree up to a point. But as I put on years may eyesight gets pickier. My night vision just ain't what it used to be anyway and I find I need stronger light just for ordinary tasks.

Enjoy your good vision now while you can.

i use a fusion 36 led in my 2d and 4d maglites and can highly recomend them (check candle power forum for reviews). they are at least 400 lumens and cost about £15 of ebay. the only thing extra i did was put an old c cell maglite spring between the drop in and the lense to make sure it is always pressed down since it doesnt screw on.
