I'm curious, in a general sort of way, about the number of custom knifemakers in the UK?

Here in the US, they are pretty common, although it's a bit of a chore to become well known. Kinda like musicians, talent is not enopugh, perhaps, it requires some degree of luck to get a following.
In a recent issue of one of my outdoor magazines, which contained 75 pages total, I counted 11 ads for knifemakers. Some were well know, like Bob Dozier, others were just simple classified ads offering their goods.
So do you all have a fair numbe rof custom makers in-country from which to choose a blade, or do factory blades rule the day?

Can I ask what you would consider 'normal' to pay for a custom made blade ? A rough lower/ upper end figure ?

cheers,
Toddy

Good question.
Personally, I think a low end figure on a custom blade would be about $100 dollars U.S.
If I, personally, was looking to buy a custom blade, I'd budget about $250.
Most I ever parted with for a blade was $350.......

There are quite a few folk at various levels of hobbist-maker, and a few full or part time professional makers. Generally prices tend to be higher than in the US because A) the cost of living is higher, hence everything cost more, and B) many of the specialist materials and tools are not readily available and therefore have to be imported, which adds cost.

There is a forum www.britishblades.com which has a lot of UK makers as members. Quite a few US makers also post there.

British blades is graet place to see all kinds of knives from around the world.

How custom do you mean btw materials blade design, handle and sheath or you pick the blade and choose hanld e material or just buying something that has been made already.
