I am making a crooked knife, to work on green wood. The handle is still rasped rough on the pictures. Has anybody else made one of these and how effective are they?

Not actually completed any yet Jojo, but I have two on the go as well as modifying a sheeps foot paring knife from an agri-supplier.
If they turn out anygood, I'll get some pictures up but don't hold your breath - there are plenty of other projects on the go as well.
Yours looks to be very tough, being short. Or is that a trick of the camera?

I used a bit of oak for the handle and 2mm 01 steel. I am just trying to get the angles of the blade right and the blade is only 3" long. I am experimenting really and when I have used this one a bit, I'll make another one with a curve in it, so as to be able to hollow things out. should be useful for things like canoe building and paddle making, bows, etc.

I am glad I am not the only one with numerous projects on the go! Always seem to be drifting from one thing to another. Definitely not enough time in the day :D

Been using them most of my life. They take some getting used to, pretty much like a one handed drawknife. With a bend in the blade they work well for carving bowls and cups. Locally they are also known as a "canoe" knife, as they were used in construction of birchbark canoes.

The pics are unfortunately a bit dark  the blade is 3" long, the handle is Oak and 5" long.

The next one will have a curved blade.

Jojo,
I'm trying to use old metal files as the base material, and they bend quite well in a flame of a gas blow-torch - though need heat-treatment afterwards to get back to hard/tough.
Are you left handed by the way?

I have used 01 steel because I happened to have some at hand. I haven't tried old files yet but will eventually, I have seen photos of a folding knife somewhere made with a file and it looks quite good. Yes, I am left handed, hence the left handed crooked knife :D , but I intend to make a right handed one and try and find a few interested people to try it for me to have feed back on its usefulness for the sort of things we tend to do, would you be interested? Might even try to sell  a few when I get round to become a member!

I used the old Rayburn we have in the kitchen to heat my blades. Worked a treat! :D , it's quite close to the back door, so I managed to keep the smell of oil outside! :D
