Well i finally found a local wood with ash trees (been looking for a while for a source of cramp balls) a beautiful specimen which had fell lying on the ground. Scored 7 of them they are now drying out on the radiator im so glad i never give up and bought some off ebay...
 
Well done chap ! once you start finding them you cant stop. I was out on Wednesday with two friends on the MOD ranges walking. I used three in my kelly kettle (pre dried at home) base as most of the tinder i had to gather was wet. They do a great job in helping to maintain the heat and have a almost drying effect on the damp tinder. Cheers MB
 
you can also use them as a fire extender/s when using fire bow drills. cut them in a few slices and let them dry at will or in the summer months. cheers the interceptor boy.
