I've just checked my stash and they've turned to dust again, must remember to stick them in the freezer for a night next time.

Good tip. I just checked some which my son chucked in his firebox a couple of years ago, without freezing, and they're pretty crumbly under the hard outer. I have no idea if that's just how they go, but luckily I got some fresh at the weekend anyway, found on fallen ash.
