Can anyone recommend the best core type to use for braiding around when making a leather dog lead?

I need one that is strong but small in diameter.

Thanks

Depends how small is small... Paracord could be a good core, or really any rope, preferably synthetic so it does not rot inside, as long that it is the right size. I'd use boat ropes from a chandler, or even stuff from B&Q, as I believe they do sell ropes of various sizes. Have fun with it and post some pics when you're done.:)
