Hi Guys,
Im of out to test the new hammock tomorrow night and popped past the fishmongers tonight and picked up half a dozen mackerel to cook on an open fire.
I was looking for the best way to cook them without pans or foil, maybe make a grill from green wood...

Is there any types of wood that are best for this, any to avoid?

Trying to get the smokey flavour...

Any info would be greatly appreciated by me and my tummy!

cheers

We've skewered them straight through the middle (head to tail) with a kind of in and out stitch (if that makes sense) and suspended them over the fire. They don't take very long to cook so keep an eye on them. Gorgeous

I appreciate this might not be quite what you had in mind , but how about using a piece of wire mesh over the fire to cook them on. It would qualify as lightweight cookware.

Try a small brush aframe and direct the smoke from the fire into it. Hang the fish inside then use some wet oak chips to make the smoke. Adds a wonderfull taste.
