Have you got a network cable to plug into your laptop and then into the back of your router?
If you use that method you'll likely get a better speed.
If you can be bothered ...
Go to Start, then Run
Type in
cmd
In the window that comes up type
ipconfig /all
It'll give you a list of numbers, look for the number next to
Default Gateway (probably 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.254)
Hit enter a few times to get to a new line, then type
ping 192.168.1.1 (or whatever your gateway is) then press enter
It should say
Reply from 192.168.1.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
It's the bit in red which will tell us how good your wireless link to your router is, if that's slow to start with then it needs sorting first
