Otherwise known as a Woolies cupboard storage shelf :)

I've posted this on BB, but the BCUK crowd may find it useful too:

Just in case anyone's interested, I was browsing around today trying to find a compact grille that I could use over a fire or make an impromptu barbecue, but which is small enough to stick in a pack and take down to the beach to cook a few mackerel while I'm on my hols.

And in Woolworths, I found this:

on the face of it, it looks ideal - mackerel sized (or enough for a pack of sausages or 4 burgers etc), collapsible and flippin' cheap (£5)

It would also be ideal for a couple of pans (it even has a helpful raised rim to stop your food / pans sliding off and ending up in the fire) - shown with a couple of zebra 12cm billies:

It's legs fold:

If you want one, this is what yer looking for:

I don't know how durable it will prove with prolonged fire top use, but it looks perfect for a barbie.

cheers

When will you get to field test it? A good workout is required I think. It looks robust enough, but the fire will ultimately test its suitability. I reckon you've probably found the next must have bit of kit!

If it ever stop raining, I might build a little fire and give it a go tomorrow!

It's weak point is probably the legs - I could see them possibly losing their spring after a good firing, which would make their ability to locate in the grille less secure. However, the grille would still be usable without the legs - a couple of 5mm rods through the upstand would allow you to support it on rocks etc. I wouldn't imagine that charcoal would affect the legs though - time will tell :)

cheers

Was thinking that the legs might be a weak point. Perhaps a couple of tent pegs (if on soft ground) pinning the legs down and open?

From what I can see from the pictures, the only problem you may get is the legs at the top coming apart with the heat and popping out of the bracket that locks it in the stowed or open position. I doubt it would happen, but a simple clip made from wire to be snapped in place after putting it up would be a good security lock to prevent it.

Test it first though, it may not need modifying at all!
