When its cold and im either using a Bivi or Hammock i usually wake up with a sore throat, my only assumption is that the "cold" air is giving me a sore throat.

Does anyone else experience this? any one got a good solution?

Sometimes I used to get a sore throat when I went cross-country running. I reckon it was something like hay fever, which I had mildly at one time. Does that sound possible in your case? If so there are ways of attacking the problem, not all of which are printable. :)

I've seen a couple of mods done by people where they hang a kind of fleece face tent over their face from the ridgeline to breath in warmer air at night. Shugemery did a video on the tube, I think its in his cold weather series for 0f weather with one, could be worth looking at ;)

If my neck is exposed to cold weather or coldish drafts I develop a sore throat. The only remedy I found was to keep my neck covered up most of the time unless its hot.

I get a sore throat nearly every time i stay out which i used to think was the cold air etc , but now i am certain it is smoke from the fire !

Yep, snoring, unless you tape your mouth closed its going to drop open and off you go. True friend Nigel said to me "Rich is it OK mate
if I give you a right good smack to stop you snoring"...I'd not mess with him so I make sure I sleep on my side.

There are other benefits from side sleeping, its easier to pass wind without getting the while asleep 'stain of shame' on your skid pans and of course less heat loss as less body mass is in contact with the ground.

which way are you placing your fire in your camp, parallel to you or opposite, inhailing a lot of smoke can give you sore throat, what you do is if that is the case, as soon as you up make sure you clear your throat and drink a glass or two of warm water. that should do it and the rest if the above, cheers the interceptor boy.

You probably sleep with you mouth open :D...Our nasal appendiges are designed to heat/cool & humidify the air before it enters the lungs,......our throats are not & can get de-hydrated & irritated by the constant passage of air.

My first guess would of been wood smoke, or the Particle Matter in the smoke. Most folk don't worry about breathing in smoke, but certain woods effect some whereas other they don't. Silver Birch gives me a sore throat, so badly once I ended up in hospital. Google ' Hut lung ' to see why the World Health Org is taking it so seriously and how Scandinavia, Spain, Japan and most of the Third World are raising awareness.

Im also thinking the fly net on the hammock isnt helping (breathing in my own carbon monoxide) so i'll keep the furthest zip open a bit to circulate air in an attempt to help.

I get the same problem when sleeping out in the open. It doesn't even have to be all that cold but if there is a chill in the air then it affects me. It doesn't give me much of a sore throat but more sore sinuses, I must mostly breathe through my nose whilst sleeping.

I found wearing a buff pulled up over my mouth and nose helps. A regular buff is light enough to not get too warm on my face. Something like that might help you too.

Cheers Sean

When I sleep out I sometimes fall asleep on my back and end up mouth breathing, if I do I tend to wake up with a sore throat first thing. Reckon if I'm on my side it never happens...
