Cleaning

I have an old knif and Axe that are probably over 40 years old .. the knife definatly is.

I want to give them a good clean up before i get to sharpen them up properly after years of neglect.

Whats it the best thing to use to clean them up.

depends how rusty/dirty they are? a good start would be some wire wool and oil... something like wd40 maybe

On an axe restoration I used wet and dry sand paper, moving through the grits and then finished it of with very fine wire wool, left a lovely finish with no scratch marks. Did require elbow grease though!

Soak them in mollasses for a week or two, gets rid of rust, without removing any metal. I did a Billhook this way.

There not rusty just well used

Try some Autosol to polish them.
