i bought a cheap 3m x 3m tarp from ebay and it only has six [6] stitched loops [stitched well] no complaints with this tarp thus far albeit a thin one for two [2] season use
i have zero sewing skills yet i have repaired tarps with eyelets and still have a lot of eyelets thereby have added some eyelets around the edges where there should be loops or eyelets as standard to maximise the use of the tarp to give more options for setting up
where the cheap tarps lack loops in the middle i am thinking of getting a few of those elastic ties with the beads instead of looking for smooth stones and-such attached fore ease of use and removal and as they will be on the inside of the tarp the elastic bungee can be used to hang a light or clothes to dry
