I have a cheap hatchet for splitting kindling at home for the fire.
My question is, is it worth re-profiling it or should I just get a decent hatchet?.
There have been numerous reprofiling threads on here and they usually turn out pretty good. If nothing else it's a fun project.
Pat the end of the day if you mess it up you've not lost much. Just remember to take it slowly and keep the axe cool.
I would keep an eye out for a vintage axe head in the style your after on eBay and re hang it. I made a Swedish style Axe out of a £5 axe that turned out ok but was a lot of work.
I'm not sure what it is but a lot of modern axes use 1045 steel and I just don't get on with it and struggle to get a hair popping edge? I prefer harder steels and a lot of the vintage stuff is good steel.
