I know this is not strictly a bushcrafty thing - its more for family car-camping / fixed camp type stuff over the summer but I would like people's advice or recommends.....

I am looking for a circular cooking grate to hang underneath my steel tripod so I can grill things over the fire - I am looking for a reasonably priced circular grill grate. I have found this one but its a charcoal grate and I am wondering if it would be safe for food use (rather than sitting charcoal on) and would not rust (do you think it is mild steel or stainless)? Does anyone know of anywhere else that might do cheap cooking grates

I'd guess its chrome plated, so should be ok with food on it.

You see I am not quite so sure it is chrome plated. Yes - for the food grate yes, but for the charcoal grate it might not be. Why I ask - with so many things made in china at the moment one is never quite so sure what metals are in things...and if it is not designed to cook food on then it might not be food safe. I would hate to give my kids cadmium poisoning!!!

There are plenty of round wire cooling racks (up to 12") in home baking shops. Alternatively, Tesco used to do a barbecue with a chian pulley, wire BBQ rack, 5' tripod and fire tray on legs. Cost £9.99 delivered. I bought one to canabalise for exactly the purpose you have in mind (2' grill tray). This was 18 months back mind you but someone may still have them!

Yes, I think I even mentioned them in another thread 18 months ago, http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showpost.php?p=111788&postcount=20

landmann tripod barbecue

Seem not to do them anymore, could try the grill from this though, http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.202-4848.aspx , £14.99

Other option is barbecue spare parts, and find a replacement grill for a round bbq.

Just hit a few garage sales, and look for a beat up portable charcoal bar-b-q grill. Pull the round grill off of it and junk the rest. I saved the round grills from two different ones that were all burnt/rusted out, and use them over the wood fire in my rock firepit. They are designed to cook on, and they were free. I don't even bother to pack them away when not in use. They just set on the rocks by my firepit below the house. Yes, I do have to scrape a little rust off them when I want to use them, but so what. You usually have to brush the grill down anyway - to remove burnt on food/grease.

There are also some of those "table top" charcoal bar-b-q grills in the stores that you can pick up for just a few bucks - if you need to buy new. They aren't very heavy-duty, but are very servicable. And the cost to replace it is minimal.

So check out some garage sales, or check with a neighbor, and see if they have a beater portable charcoal bar-b-q grill setting around gathering dust. There's your inexpensive round grill.

Just some humble thoughts to share. Take them as such.

Thinking about this - I wonder if you could find a spare grill for a Weber (kettle) barbecue? They are round and come in a variety of sizes. They are a top end product so I bet they sell "spares"

They do do food grill cooking grates as spares - see the the weber site:

http://store.weber.com/items/?pid=1176

But I cannot find anyone who sells it in the UK. They do a hinged one for £18 + P&P but that's not any use for hanging underneath a tripod (and also more expensive)

Found this on Amazon, sure if you shop around you will find it cheaper though, as long as the hinged portion is on top it should be fine suspended from three short chains then to the tripod chain

Way I understand it is the listing is for everything shown, tripod, fire pit, grill etc, I've just mailed the seller and will let you know what they say, if it's that price, looks like a bit of a bargain to me, even with the postage:)
