This is an idea I had for a natural method not using a tin. I just thought someone may have already tried it and wondered if it worked or not. That is burying the wood in the ground and lighting the campfire over it. This would hopefully create an airtight environment where the wood would char but not burn. It could then be dug up in the morning.

It is even simpler than that.

If the punk is already dry then you only need to char the end of the piece and not the whole lot. Stick it in the flame for a couple of seconds, take it out and snuff it and job done. That end will take a spark nicely and that process then chars the remainder as you go along.
