Carving willow

[Baggy]

A friend gave me a lump of willow so I thought I would have a go at a bowl.

Willow proved to be a strange wood to carve, water sprayed when it was hit with the axe and it scratches or dents when you just look at it.

The wood was also very light and felt weak so the bowl is a bit chunky

I don't think that I will carve willow again but it was fun to sit in the woods and make the bowl

edit: should have mentioned that it is 16 inches end to end

Yeah, odd stuff willow. It turns a bit weirdly too (woodturning) and has a sort of fuzzy texture, but turned out ok, and seems solid enough. It has a reputation for splitting too, but I think it is good to play with different woods. Good job.

It looks great, but it is good to know what willow is like to carve before starting something that won't suit it.

Willow is quite an awkward wood to carve, even just carving a bowdrill set is challenging with it, never mind a 16 inch bowl! That's masseeeev!
