Hi people,
I'm in the market for a new pack, I recently bought a rocket pack but I just don't find it comfortable so it's back on the bay!! Could be a bargain as its still got all its tags on!!
Anyway, I no a lot of people have the sabre 45 and I like them too, but I'm struggling to find an actual review of them and even less about whether the hip belt actually helps with weight?
Iv looked at the vulcan and crusader bit they are both ruddy heavy to start with so I wanna steer clear of them!
I have beem offered a Lowe alpine appacalean trail 65-15 pack which is used for £25 so that may yet be an option.
Got a budget of around £70 quid so any ideas would be great.
I would rather steer clear of the issue Bergans to.
Cheers
Steve

I'd suggest trying out as many as you can (with weight in them) before buying ... I know so many people that buy things because of reviews they have read and then hated the thing when they actually use it themselves.

If it's comfort you're looking for, do try some from the Deuter range. When I first put one on I was amazed at how comfortable it was, and after that I bought the first one that popped up on BCUK classifieds.

The thing is when I tried one on I wasn't even looking for a pack for me, it was because I was bored while SWMBO was trying on packs for herself!

Deuter packs tend to be at the upper end of the price range but you'll often see them on sale for 30% less than the shop window prices.

After many years of using military packs I bought a Deuter Appilation 50, most comfortable pack I have owned.
Get round the shops and try as many as you can then decide which is right for you

I agree, that is by far the most common sense way, my problem is its a min 50 mile round trip to try packs on!!
But the the advice off here will help narrow it down!!
Thanks

Comfort is such a personal thing as we are all very different shapes and have different needs. I like packs by Osprey Arcteryx Blackhawk and MaxP. although none of the above are cheap brands. I own nearly a dozen different size and style packs to suit the diffent uses I put them to. Each make and model has pros and cons.

The pack I use most often is a Stomp 2 med pack closely followed by a Cooke Custom Potage pack.

I can highly recomend a lowe alpine salient 70L same size as a sabre 45 with pockets but as you can see in the pick the lid can be raised to make it even bigger it has plenty or straps to attach things and compress but most of all it has a adjustable back system and great waist belt, when setup right i can slacken off the shoulder straps and it will just sit there so all the weight is on the belt. Iv owned a sabre and didnt like it at all and compared to this its miles off in comparison. I use mine only once a year when we goes on a big winter trip and i carry two army canvas tents in it and its very very comfy

Hi,

I think what your asking is pretty hard for anyone to actually give you any meaningful recommendations or feed back.

A sabre 45 and a Vulcan / Crusader for example are very disparate bits of kit.

I'd personally look at three basic questions and answer those.

1. How much stuff are you going to want to carry? As this dictates the size of Rucksack you'll need.
2. Does it actually need to be Green / Camo ? If not you have a wider selection to choose from.
4. How far are you actually going to carry it? If its say for 20K across Dartmoor then that's a lot different to 700m from the car park to the woods which will dictate want you need comfort level wise..

When you get to the point of understanding what you need then the only real way to get something that fits well is to go to a good outdoor store and try stuff on. With Daysacks I think this is less important as your no carrying that much weight in them but a larger pack I think it's vital to try it on with weight in and see how it fit you...

Forces NRT66. Cheap, nearly as light as some "lightweight" packs at about 2kgs, roomy without being massive, internal frame and comfy. Lifetime warranty on materials and workmanship with Highlander too.

Thanks for the feedback, just to answer your questions, it needs to be big enough for 4 or. 5 days camping, it doesn't need to camo or army at all, just getting into hiking, I have a 85 litre pack for when I'm base camping.
Cheers

I have a Lowe Alpine. They have adjustable length backs so can be fitted to almost everyone. Well made V comfortable. At UKP 25 it is a steal if undamaged. The Appalachian 65 goes new for about 180 plus tax over here, so UKP 25 really could be a bargain. Only thing wrong with it IMO i that it weigh 5 lbs, but that doe at least make it long lasting.
