Any suggestions about where to go for a trial canoe/bushcrafting trip? I'm thinking of next summer and would need somewhere within reasonable reach of Bath/Bristol, where I can hire a couple of canoes and find a location for an overnight hammocking camp with a fire. Around Ross-on-Wye maybe?

Any ideas gratefully recieved.

Cheers, Ted W

I did a canoe trip along the Wye earlier this year.

This link might help.
http://www.igreens.org.uk/canoeing_the_wye.htm

Starting at Glasbury we canoed about 20 miles the first day and stayed at Bycross Farm. The campsite is in an orchard so no issue with hammocking and they allow fires.

We paddled onto another campsite the following day called Lucksall but I think this one was a little bit more tent orientated.

I found this blogg really useful in planning my trip

And I bought this as well http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/homeandleisure/recreation/canoeing/31509.aspx

Although it's not essential it gives tired arms a target to work to.

I know a few people have gone down the rough of rough camping along the banks but in fairness it's not massively encouraged.

Hope this helps
