South east Scotland.
Hi a mate of mine is looking into buying a canoe,he's done a bit of padding but with hire canoe's and his girlfriend who's German has done quite a bit in her youth both in Sweden and Germany,i said id ask on here what the recommendations are, He's not really wanting wood or Ally, enough room to carry two adults and maybe a child with camping kit, sturdy tough but not to heavy. Money wise if it suits his needs and is good quality he don't mind paying.

My forum name is my canoe's name ! It's an Old Town Charles River. Great for solo ww or tandem cruising. It is fine for me lifting solo but others disagree. It's 38kg unloaded.

i am a canoe coach and kayak coach. We got a lottery grant at school so bought these cheaper boats by Riber products. A bit heavy but very good quality and much, much cheaper than the normal brands. Almost half the price inc. two paddles and PFDs. In fact the pic on their website of the canoe is my school on Loch Ard. The riber boats are very well made and have taken punishment of kids bashing them about etc. the seats are particularly robust. I have not got round to moving the middle seat slightly back for a better pivot for solo paddling.

Old Town Charles River , the royalex one is lighter.

Ps - Did this video review in June for Riber and they sent out a free s.o.t and some drybags for my school.

They were used at the Glasgow Edinburgh canoe trail in June, links to some pics here https://flic.kr/s/aHsjZepF1Z

pm me for more info on either boats.

He can have a look at venture which are bomb proof but a bit heavy. Old Town discovery is popular and usually a few on fleabay. Apache is a nice budget fibreglass option with a reasonable price. We No Nah are nice and Mad River aren't bad.

Reviews of all these on Song of the Paddle
