Looks like a deer has been raking its antlers there.

Would those deep gouges be caused by repeat visits, probably by the same deer ?

many thanks all not seen any reds in this wood but a large group of fallow
some time back thers were stores of a BIG BLACK CAT the local press said it was a pummer
looks like finding a nother wood to hide in

Whats the height of them? Boar do that too and I know there are some on the chase.

the bottom of the marks about 8 inch of the ground top maybe 3 foot this is not on the chase but a small wood not far away

Maybe a little too high for boar then, atleast the british variety anyway. Id go with deer too then.
