Camping with a puppy

Ive finally taken the big step, probably a mid life crisis, of getting a dog (grew up with jack russels but never had one of my own). Does anyone else camp with their dog, if so any tips or advice?

Thanks Toddie, shes a clumsy, excitable, nibbly ball of cuteness at the moment. Even the cats seem to have accepted her 😄

The teething; it's almost as though their jaws itch, and like babies everything goes in the mouth. Masses of energy, tripping over her own feet, like kids with new shoes, and then crash sound asleep and the cuddliest thing on the planet.

We had a puppy that was reared in our house with cats. It grew up thinking it was a kind of cat itself. Crazy dog, cross between a collie and a spaniel. It had so much energy that it was virtually unstoppable. He got all four paws up on the arm of the sofa one day and tried to spring off like a cat He looked utterly flummoxed when he found himself flat out on the hearthrug instead

Lovely looking dog,I had a boarder collie that look just like her when he was a pup,we called him mutely he he he lol.he was a great dog loved running around the fields chasing rabbits,just an all round good dog.You will have some great adventures with him.I used to take my dog I have now (labarador cross) he used to sleep next to me under the tarp,but now I use my hammock he keeps me awake wanting to see the wildlife(chase) at night.so I don't take him as much plus as he is getting older he has become more nervous.We still have some great walks through and about the northdowns.
P.s collies love to chew your boots up

Absolutely gorgeous.

Well done on selecting crate training, took me years and years to come round to it but i'm now convinced it's the best option for pups.

As far as hiking advice, take it really really easy, too much too soon and you'll cause irreversible damage to a growing young pup.
Try and socialise as much as possible, we take our JRT pretty much everywhere with us, it does make a more relaxed dog for sure.

What a cracker. Take them out early and often and they soon get used to it, and then you have a friend and companion for life.

Shes already had the run of the garden and seriously savaged several fallen leaves
The bantams were a bit wary although our black hen looked up for teaching her some manners. As soon as she gets her jabs well be off with my dads jrt up the downs and my mates choccy Lab round the woods.

Be really careful as a puppies exuberance will quickly overtake it's limits with another couple of playful dogs to chase around, so it's easy for the pup to cause irreparable damage to itself.

Also keep an eye on the pups pads as at that age they are very soft and delicate.

i take my jacks with me everywhere, generally only one at a time if i'm camping though.....my hammock won't sleep all 3 plus me.....or rather my sleeping bag won't sleep all 3 plus me. I've got one that's so docile he'll happily strut along and not go more than 20 feet from me, the other 2 however are very hunt driven and will try and disappear down the nearest rabbit hole and fetch dinner.

Depending on how long you are out, you may want to invest in a jacket for the dog, or at the very least a hi-vis jacket depending on what your dog is like for "going to ground", nothing worse than seeing the sog one minute and losing it the next and spending a while looking for it...only to find it back at basecamp in your hammock but that's a story for another time....

And I'll be a middle aged bloke and go Squeal Puppy! too. Lovely looking pup there, hope that the two of you have years of adventures together. Best woods companions ever dogs.

You'd be really well advised to not let the youngster do too much too soon; I've seen a lot of damage done to pups, especially pads and feet, by just letting them do too much walking and running with other and older dogs.
Have a read around on the 'net, it really is crucial to get this bit of it right and you'll have years of good honest and faithful companionship and she'll be the best friend you could ever want for.

Take her out as soon as possible to get her used to camp life, especially fires and the noises of the night. Mine came with me at 12 weeks and he never looked back.

Ive got most of feb off so after her jabs im gonna try and get a few nights away at a mates property.

Great looking hound. Terribly cute. I exposed my two to as many different experiences as possible from an early age. I got them in my canoe straight after there jabs and camping as soon as possible. They stay in their crate at night in my van or the awning. I take their crate into the woods with me as well. The younger one likes to chew. Gives me peace of mind that I know she is safe. Bear in mind that a puppy has a much greater surface area compared to their mass so feel the cold more than an adult.

You might need to watch that wee pink nose in the sunshine, and dogs and cats really don't like sunscreen but they can easily be burnt on, and can develop cancer like we do, on their ears and noses.

Mine started camping, bushcrafting and canoeing with me at 16 weeks old. He's now 8 yrs old

He still goes Canoeing with his mum.
