Camera Bag...

Hi all

I'm thinking about getting something to carry my camera in (DSLR) so that it's at hand when I've got my rucksack on. I was thinking about a Maxpedition Thermite Versipack as it'll carry more than just the camera. If the camera would fit in it!

Has anybody out there got one of these?

They look like something that could be carried with a rucksack.

Any body got any thoughts or possible alternatives?

I use a LowePro Stealth Reporter Bag. Its got really good weatherproof-ness and in extreme downpours, it has an extra hood for protection.

If you don't carry lots of lenses or camera body's them you have quite a bit of room for other things.

I'm not that familiar with the thermite, but I seem to recall a few people here have them - maybe Toddy(?). Would you be carrying it around your waist or over a shoulder? I have a jumbo Versipack that I use for geocaching - I have all sorts in it - there's loads of room and it's very comfy to carry. I once tried to carry it with a rucksack though - major PITA and not recommended. Mine is over the shoulder only - so this may not be a problem for you.

I've used the themite with a rucksack but saying that, unless you're prepared to mod the inside there is no where near enough protection for a DSLR, or least I wouldn't trust mine to one.

I'm in a similar situation, I want to carry it on expeds but don't want to leave rucksack behind.

I don't have a DLSR but my digicam goes in one of the neoprene padded Exped rolltop bags that John Kelly was group buying a while ago and that goes in the Versipak. No harm has become it yet. Would that be an option for the thermite?

Another vote for LowePro. They make very good bags and my DSLR has survived all sorts in it...

I also got a CCS canvas and leather bag for when i'm expecting good weather as it looks and feels nicer but for being practical, LowePro every time.

That might work, I've not got one of those bags but I'll have a look and see how it does for size, you might need to go for the next one up from the thermite, can't remember if thats the versipack or the fatboy

Very tempted with a lowepro though, especially as the AW ones have the waterproof cover.

Another vote (unsurprisingly) for the Jumbo Versipack. Fits a Nikon D50 and lens no problem with plenty of room to spare. Unobtrusive and comfortable to carry.

Thanks for the help guys.

I wondered about the Thermite as it looks like it hangs down against the leg, probably below a rucksacks waist belt.

I do like the look of the Jumbo Versipacks but as said already, PITA to carry with a rucksack. At least that's how they look.

I'll take a good look around at some of the Lowe Pro kit. Seen some other options from them that might go well with a rucksack.
