Byrd knives???

There's a short review of a Byrd knife in this month's Shooting Sports.
A subsiduary of Spyderco, and taking a lot of influence from them but MUCH cheeper (£16.00 for the 3.5 inch drop point on review).
The steel is 'similar to AUS-8', they did quote the type but I can't remember it

Anyone ever heard of Byrd before - if they're anywhere near as good as the parent company knives then these could be worth a look
There's a bit on them here (it's about the only knife site my work software will allow me to view - dam computers :twak: ) the one on review is the Raven.

AS I understand it they are actually Spyderco's but made in China from cheaper materials. Normal Spyerderco's are all made in Golden. To differentiate them the spyderhole has been changed to an elongated hole that looks like a birds eye - hence the name byrd.......

plenty of spydercos are made in japan are the byrd knives? the byrd knives are designed by sal and his team and i dont doubt the design is very good.. the materials are ok but cheap as bardster says i know there was a mix up with the steel to begin with as chineese steel turned out not to be what they thought it was i that was the ones marked 440C .. i dont expect you can expect to feel the quality of your UKPK in a byrd knife but i cant say that for certain..

They are Chinese made knives, but well made Chinese knives. Are they a patch on the standard Spyderco's? No, but then for the money they are very good and importantly are safe to use unlike most other "made in China" knives. I am not really interested in the line, but then Sal did say these are prolly not going to be of that much interest to the hard core Spyderco collectors and users.

Well worth the money though. If I did not already own plenty of knives, I would certainly buy these over Fox and Whitby branded stuff.

Byrd knives are made for Spyderco in China. The same factory also make the same spec knives for other companies.

I have a Byrd and the quality is OK. Proper Spyderco knives are made both in Seki City Japan & Colorado USA.

They are regularly for sale on eBay.

You can get them cheap from the USA at New Graham.

Joe has them too.

Here's a picture of my Byrd Harrier, which at the time was the cheapest in the range.

It's big and heavy, ugly but well made. It's nothing like a Spyderco really (except that it's ugly ). You couldn't carry this one in your pocket like you can with a Delica FRN for example.

Those are Micarta handles on it. It's a great knife for lending to people who aren't knife people. They are suitably impressed and it doesn't matter too much if they damage it.
