Arising from another thread is the idea of a bungie fire drill. It comprises a cord and a bungie fixed to a solid object in place of a bow. I have tried this today and achieved smoke without difficulty.

I also tried foot power instead but could not get enough control as yet. Maybe a pulley to allow downward force would be a way forward on that.

I've tried this method some time ago and found it very tiring and I never got a coal just smoke. I find the good old bow to be the best but I would be interested to see a foot powered version work

I have now cracked the bungie drill fire starting!!!!!! James is right - it can be hard work - pulling against the tension in the bungie. I got around this by two modifications:-

1) 1 set up three bungies end to end, total length probably about 8 feet. Or, you could have a very long bungie. This helps because you get a lot more stretch for a lot less increase in the resistance from the bungie.

2) Put an extra turn or more round the drill so that it will still grip at low tensions.

That's it really. Otherwise just like bow drilling. I used rose drill on pine and got a live coal.

This doesn't yet mean I know how to do it with foot power, but I have a couple of thoughts to work on.
