they are parasitic and their adult stage is shorter than the larval, they inhabit coniferous woodland and now until august is the time to see them, but given that most pine woodland in the uk is dense plantation, it could account for them not being so visible.

Wood wasp. Actually a sort of sawfly. No sting. Lovely creature, and I've never seen one, unfortunately. Envious.

(Don't know where the abrupt typing style came from. Oh well....)
