Rays live in coastal waters too.
Shark skin is ’grippy’. So is ray skin.
I am not sure if they used any of these skins ( fish) on a knife or sword handle, but I am sure they would if they had them.
People were not stupid in those days. Masters of their environment.
I never understood why the North Americans never managed to master smelting and use of metals, as the South Americans did.
They obviously had a need, as they adopted to metals quickly once Europeans invaded?
