I've got one of the above,it has been issued and looks to have had little,if any use.

The problem is the foam/padding in the shoulder straps, it's gone hard, very hard!
Any ideas what could have caused this and if it can be softened up again?

All help appreciated!

Regards,
Andy

I had the same problem the 'faom' went solid and broke into pieces, the same happened with the back padding, it went really solid.I cut mine (straight down the back) took all the solid padding out out and put some strips of roll mat in instead and wrapped with duck tape. The only thing i can think of is that the swat reacts with the foam, as mine was foamy for about 12 months.

The foam used is quite firm anyway but if it has gone hard then the only thing to do is remove it (you can use several layers of a closed cell foam sleeping mat ) but you'll have to cut the stiching holding the webbing & resew them back afterwards too, hopefully you're good with needle & thread..... if not, then how about making a new section of padding that will fit under the shoulder strap (where it touches your shoulders), many people do this as they find the shoulder strap padding too firm anyway...
What causes it ? no idea but heat surely has a part to play somewhere.

Hey everyone, I've been reading through your posts and I have a similar problem with my shortback Bergen where the padding has become very hard. I have a shortback Bergen with the olive green straps, do people know if the hard padding problems affects this type of Bergen only? I've seen other bergens with dark green straps and I wonder if they are affected with hard padding foam.
