Since I would like to have Branston pickle and it is nowhere to be found, I tried to make my own sort of.

Finely diced carrots and onion, boiled in water to get them a little softer.
Finely diced pickled cucumber, a splash of the pickle juice.
Some date paste.
Some HP sauce
Some sweet chili sauce.
A squirt of ketchup.
A splash of white wine vinegar.

Mixed all together and is now resting in the fridge. Tomorrow I´ll see what it taste like.
Never had the chance to try real Branston so I can not compare. Only read about it online.

Why can’t you get it where you are?
Want me to post you a jar lol

There is a lot of other countries delicacies that we don´t have. Too small market I suppose, we are only 5.5 million people here. In UK that is about the number of people in London.
I found a webshop that had Branston but it was sold out.

There is a little bar/bistro in Nanterre, Paris which I visit (maybe) one a year. The boss there (who is in 7/7/365) produces a jar of Branston when a British/Irish customer orders a croque monsieur and with a little giggle pops a spoonful onto their plate with the care and delicacy of a michelin star chef adding beluga caviar to a fine canape.

....and Scotland's population is about 5.5million too.

These folks sell individual portions....and they sell Branston too.
Might be easier sending catering portions than trying to get a jar through customs ?
Maybe not :dunno:

@Herman30
How did your pickle turn out though ?

Good idea....it's the boiling down that takes the time with chutney, but I found a site that sells dehydrated malt vinegar :)
So, it's powder that I can add to minced veggies that have been nuked, to make a 'chutney' in a hurry. Really good with apples, but handy over things like home made crisps too

Oh man but you have other stuff you dont get elsewhere... Mustamakkara, Leippäjuusto, Karjalanpiiraaka... want back to finland right now ^^

Pickling stuff also isnt that hard and in most cases its healthier than the foods from the groceries. We always have various jars for fermenting veggies and condiments standing around

Mustamakkara with Branston...Both good.

I dont know how my Finnish Auntie manages; but she left in the late 60s and I suspect has come to terms with the idea we dont have saunas much.

(Still not got British citizenship yet, even though married to a national 20 years...)

I actually have Branston from these folks. The containers are quite robust, but I'd bag or cling film them if they're going in a pack.

Since brexit I no longer buy anything from UK (I very much would like to) because now I would have to pay customs fee and VAT, something I do not have to pay when buying inside EU.

It's the same thing the other way too.
I used to buy beautiful linen threads from Germany, and weaving books from Sweden, quilting fabric from France.
I still read the websites, but I don't buy anymore :sigh:

I shouldn't have to pay duty from the EU, in reality it seems to be a bit of a lottery as to whether I do or not. Same on the outbound, sometimes the recipients get asked, sometimes they don't. There appears to be little rhyme or reason to it.
