Production is underway on bowl number 2 though being much more careful this time. When I get some time I will have a look at salvaging the other one. I like the basket/colander idea so may try that if not someone did suggest a wall mounted candle holder if I can find a way to mount in some kind of heat shield- ideas welcome :)

On your next one, you could make less work by hollowing from the flat split side, the natural curved side then becomes the outside of the bowl and most of the work on the outside is done for you ?

Cheers, Paul
Two problems with that.

One, the wood is much much more likely to split

Two, almost no grain will show up and the bowl will be very bland and boring

Silver birch is a pretty bland wood whichever way you work it, unless it's got some curl or burr of course.

What's the thinking behind the splitting ?

Put what you have carved end up. Carve a gully or drill a hole and fit a lamp gubbins to the inside of bowl. Attack the bowl with fret saw and make more pretty holes in it. Fit LED bulb (aldi has them in on cheap). Dadddaaaa! Pretty lamp.

I tried a candle on one of my own screw-ups it was a serious fire risk. I caught it before it started to burn.
