Can I string an old compound bow and use it as a re curve bow. It feels too strong but has anyone heard of it being done?. Thanks in advance x

I would say not, unless the compound was a very low poundage bow. You won’t have any of the mechanical multiplication that the long string and cams give to help you.
Thats what I thought tbh. its a 55lb bow. I cant bend it hardly when I use that shin clamp and round the back stringing technique. I can string a 50lb recurve bow easy. x
No chance. The limbs are too stiff. They cannot be bent far enough as a longbow to allow a draw. The pulleys give draw length for very little limb deflection. Not how a traditional bow works at all.
I have got a couple more of these bows. so not bothered. I was just seeing if I might make something else just for something to do. x
Hey, but you know what damascus. it was brilliant and I do give thanks before retiring something that has been of service. The bow is an anglo arms hosaka and the one Rambo used in the films (albeit modified to lose the cable bar). They are less than £100 and pretty decent for a low end compound. I was so chuffed I got two more. Do you practice archery D? x
I do, made several long bows over the years along with the arrows, being in Norfolk and friends who rear turkeys for Xmas, no shortage of feathers for fletchings. The few things I buy are points, knocks and serving string, the rest I make myself. Been twanging a bow properly since 1972 at school, even continued in the military as a hobby, fan of traditional rather than modern bows, had a couple of compounds over the years, I’m not the greatest shot but to a traditional bow the compound is far more accurate and that to me is less fun, if I want the accuracy I’ll shoot a rifle!

interersting and thanks. I started with a recurve bow and shot instinctively. I had no sight picture whatsoever and it was a year before i found out about eye dominance and that I was wired the wrong way round. I now shoot a compound bow with my fingers and have no gadgets except for 1 sight pin which somehow allows me to aim without closing one eye. I love all the traditional stuff but I wanted accuracy and shot consistency and it was taking too long. In fact it was impossible with my eyes. So we work with what we have. The main thing is I am really enjoying it and improving. I would love to have a go at making one at some point. My mates make them. I will be seeing them this weekend they are having a medieval weapons tournament. should be fun. x
You are bang on with, make the most of what you have, I have a long bow, one of the first I made and it’s to heavy for me to use now (getting old, ha ha) so I adapt and made a less heavy bow. As long as it’s fun and enjoyable regardless to what style then make the most of it.
On the note of accuracy, when I lived in Thetford, a neighbour of mine was from the US airbase nearby and he used to shoot bottle tops with his compound, made me look like an amature but the had shot all his life and so had his father!
