the Wilds of Lough Gur
During the week I chopped down a young sycamore tree in the garden and made from it a Bow drill set.

I left the parts over the course of the week to dry on the window sill and have just suceeded in producing my first ember with only my second attempt :D :D

hopefully it wasn't just beginners luck. Have got enough wood to last a while so will keep practicing.

Well done!! But are you saying that you made it out of one type of tree? I have not tried it myself yet, but the books describe how you need a mixture between hard and soft wood.

congratulations! my first bow drill set was sycamore.

all my bowdrill sets have had the spindle and harth made from the same wood.

whilst there is probably some benifit in having different woods this is offset by the need to memorise exactly which types will work well together, since i have always had succsess without using differnt materials I have not bothered learning which work in combination.
