The piece in question is the cocktail stick holder in the middle.
Now the reason that I purchased it was the nice grain and the wonderful smell the wood has, it is quite heavy also.
I am hoping to incorporate this into a knife project at some time or other.
Anybody know what wood it is, not the best of pictures I know.

It smells like a cigar case from yesteryear, and also it seems to have herringbone pattern running downwards.

I think that, admittedly kind of dark, photo looks like walnut, but what you're describing sounds more like Indian rosewood
