Came across a quilted body warmer yesterday, thought about it for two seconds (nostalgic childhood memories) then carried on down the middle isle.

I did consider it might be useful Not to have sleeves in the way when tinkering, but if I'm doing something I'm usually warm and if I'm stood about in the cold, I want my extremities covered too.

Not sure if I'm missing the point with these so any opinions on their functionality?

Enlightenment before the shelves are empty would be greatly appreciated.

They can be useful as an extra layer under something else on a cold day, without adding as much bulk as a sleeved garment.
Lidl has them very cheap, not sure how warm they are.

Yup, that's what I thought when I saw them.

The one I remember having as a kid was mostly useful for cramming what I'd scavenged into the pockets though. Some things never change.

I wear one most days.

Duck down in all of them though. Some thinner, some thicker. I did get given one with some poor synthetic filling and it never got used.

I like a good warm core but less worried about arms and legs - shorts all year too and in just a t-shirt today with pouring weather. I'm in an active job, fixing and shifting things so have freedom of movement is good for me.

@Stew, same for me, activity keeps me more than warm enough.

I thought it might be a way to save bulk over my jacket on multi day trips for when the walking's done and the chilling starts.

I’ve used them a lot. I still have fleece ones and a leather one from thirty years ago.
These days I’m usually found in a battered waxed cotton waist coat which is much the same thing. My trousers provide nine pockets but somehow I can use four more :)

I’d like to find one of those ex army sheepskin jerkins. They were great.

In the seventies our local market sold a body warmer with an advertised 25 pockets. The stall holder said he hadn’t found them all yet.
Do the hand warmers count as pockets?

I’d agree with @Stew - if you’ve got a warm core then that’s usually enough. That’s what body warmers are for.

I like them and find them very good for working outside when its a bit chilly. I have a waxed one with a wool lining, one made form sort of blanket material and a down one that i bought from Survival Aids in Euston when I was a youth.

I bought one two year ago, I have a couple, not the thickest but zero weight and on a late spring evening will take the chill away and under a jacket in winter for that extra bit warmth, ideal.

From Lidl?

Might have to give one a try. Any recommendations?

Yes from Lidl, the quality is excellent, I’ve a much thicker down version which is very warm, size n weight wise brilliant. If your out for a long walk and stop for a break, pop this on and stops you getting chilled. Excellent value for money, I paid I think about £7.

I have several, down, insulated, fleece, quilted but most commonly worn is my wax cotton ones, with importantly hand warmer pockets.

I run hot when moving about and jackets end up sweat traps, waist coats are (as long as not heavily or constantly raining) are ideal for our cool climate.

Walking dog in above freezing temps, with t-shirt, fleece jumper, shorts and wax waistcoat, I am comfortably warm.
