I've been watching this one for a while. The hole is about five feet of the ground with newly hatched chicks in it.

I love the shot of the adult looking back at you. :)

It's the male that's the cheeky one. He has used my shoulder as a perch into the hole twice now. A quick bounce on and off and he's down the hole in a second. He even cusses if I get in the way. Funny little things.

good luck to them :D keep us updated!

I certainly will. I'll keep this thread updated with pics of the growing family. There are at least five in that nest. No idea how they will all fit if the all survive as it is barely big enough to hold one adult. Hopefully the woodpecker that made that second hole won't come back.

I found another nest under construction today. Right in the roots of a Sycamore about a metre from the main entrance of a huge badger sett.

found a nest the other day as i was out for a cycle, built in the post of a gate for one of our local parks, using the hole for the slide bolt as an entry,

I should mention this is a fairly substantial steel post at that.... and with 100's of people passing daily!

Last update. The woodpecker have returned and enlarged the hole, but there is no evidence to suggest they took all, or indeed any of the birds, It's been a week since I visited and they would have fledged.
