I've not done this but I know a guy who has and it went quite well. I think that if you're inclined and enjoy fiddling and doing the work it can be a good and economic choice, although parts might be harder to find now, it seems that bike parts generally are getting harder to find, I had to wait a month for brake disks and was lucky to get hold of them.

One thing am aware of is get the battery pack from a reputable company.
Someone I subbed to on YouTube has put togehter a few ebikes himself, and one made by UnitPackPower went thermonuclear.

Yeah, could be a case of an unscrupulous company using recycled 18650 cells, rather than new.
