Big server or as the young lad next door called it - a spade :D

Worked hard for this one as the log had some rock hard compression grain in it that made things interesting, you can see it on the bark in this photo

I can normally make an eating sized spoon in about an hour, this beast took me three hours from log to what you see above and boy do i know ive done it too :D

Compression grain? is this when the tree's own weight compress's a section? dose the tree react to this and toughen the area, bit like scar tissue or dose the grain just close up? Iv seen it in trunks but did not know the details.

The grain was as tough as old boots, its where the tree reinforces a branch or branch junction to help hold up its own weight, sometimes you end up with some gorgeous figuring in the wood, this time though it was just like carving a lump of concrete and unfortunately, no appreciable figuring in the wood.
