What size batteries?

Sanyo Eneloops are pretty much the gold standard for rechargable NiMH AAs.

Depends what you mean by last a long time, do you mean have a high discharge capacity (in terms on milli amp/ hours) or do you mean last a long time between charges thus having a low self drain?

For high capacity would normally recommend Ansmann rechargable batteries http://www.ansmannenergy.co.uk/ but you don't often see them in the shops so you'll probably have to buy them online either from a distributor or amazon. Failing that Li-Ion (Lithiun ion) technology rather than NiMh (Nickel metal hydride) although these seem to be a lot more specialist for cameras, mobile phones etc...

You can also get something called a pre charged rechargeable if you want low self drain. Interestingly using them in the shed would be ideal as the colder temperature would help them. People have even been known to keep batteries in the fridge to preserve their charge

In AA/AAA format you can't beat Sanyo Eneloop. If your alarm can take the slightly higher voltage you can use Lithium AA/AAA batteries for improved longevity and cold resistance but they are not rechargeable like the Eneloops.

Cells like 3.7 volt nominal li-on's, you can't go wrong with cells from 'AW'.

I get my Eneloops from places like 7day shop or I cell on ebay.

Yes the Eneloop are the overall best in the NIMH class. There are other makes with higher capacity (longer run-time) but often are not LSD (low self discharge) like the Eneloops and will empty without being used quite quickly like in weeks. The LSD batteries retain something like 70% of their charge after 3 years!

Any NIMH rechargeable battery will charge in any NIMH charger. Alkaline batteries like the regular copper top Duracells will not recharge.

For the longest life you can't beat Lithium batteries, they are sort of install and forget. Energizer ultimates for instance will outlast Eneloops by a long way if the device they are used in draws current. They also handle severe cold better but they won't re-charge.

A Duracell Ultra AA Alkaline battery drawing 0.5 A has ~ 1.97 Ah of capacity. At 1.0 A of current draw the same battery has about 1.22 Ah of capacity.

A 2000 mAh AA Eneloop with a 1.0 A current draw has about 1.87 Ah of capacity.

A nimh battery will last longer than a regular Alkaline at higher current draws as can be seen from the figures above. At lower current draws below 0.5 A an Alkaline will most likely last longer than an nimh battery but at the risk of leakage.

This Duracell data sheet shows the capacity under different loads, you can see that the lower the current draw the better the battery performs... http://www.professional.duracell.co...product/Ultra Power/Ultra-Power_AA_MX1500.pdf

Yes that battery and charger bundle seems fine.

Eneloop. Used them for years for photography and they replace a £250 Speedlight battery pack no probs.
I have 24 AA and 12 AAA and they last for an age.

If the cost if eneloops scares you, try Recyco brand batteries.

Also, look into lead acid batteries.
