Re pitching the basha/hootchie - I've not slept under one since my army days, tending to use a tent instead. When in the TA we used to pitch them with bungees. Wouldn't this be quicker/more stable?

If you have trees to tie them to, bungees are great but have huge scope for mishap if you intent to peg then to the ground!!! Those pegs could do a lot of damage powered by a bungee!

yep, i'm an old fashioned bloke, i use bungees. but i pitch my basha the wrong way round, with the ridge running across the short side. i use a goretex bivi bag, so i have my legs sticking out from under my basha. pitching it with the ridge on the short side gives me better living/cooking space. rather than a long thin shelter. it's a great combination.
