i have just made a berry picker and was just wondering whether you knew what i should stain it with so the berry juice does not stain it instead

I would love to see a picture of your berry picker.
I personally would not do anything with it, in regards to staining it or putting a finish on it. I am sure the peoples who made and use them, over the centuries, just made and then used them. After a few uses it will take on a lovely colour and patina from use.

I would seal it with a little linseed oil or walnut oil, should do the trick and won't taint the fruit.
