Beech Trees in Winter

look for the remains of the beach mast on the ground around it looks like little fury husks the tree is a lite greenish brown with smooth bark but don;t camp near them as they tend to shead big dead branches

Other typical signs -

Beech twigs have pointed buds

The twigs have a zig-zag appearance to them (i.e. a change of direction between nodes)

Beech bark is relatively smooth and pale when compared to other UK common forest tree species

Beech tend to keep hold of their dead leaves longer than most other UK species (although that may not help you after the gales we've just had!)
