I am doing some writing and researching Bear Grylls. What do the bush craft community think of him? Has he ever given bad advice? good advice? Has he inspired anyone? or anything else that will help me build a profile. Thank you in advance. Dale x

The Grylls thing has come up in here many times, always ends up in a Mears/Grylls controversy and argument and never ends well.

I can’t see this thread going anywhere productive at all, in fact I see it
inciting an argument.

If you’re doing research, have you tried using the search engine?

This ^^^^^^^^^

They have both written extensively. Much better sources than a group of people who have developed highly individual approaches to bushcraft and its definition.

Neither for or agin the chap, he is what he is. His demonstrations are very helpful though, if ever you find yourself in a real survival situation, think what B.G. would do & then do the opposite.......it may take you longer than Grylls to get to the nearest McDonalds but you should get there without having to drink your own pee or sleep in a camel carcass.

When visiting Mors at his home in Alberta, a friend got him to watch a couple of BG TV episodes. Mors thought it was meant to be a survival parody show.

Same friend was leading an expedition in the jungle with a dad and teen son in the group. Teen son was much inspired by BG (great!)…and really wanted to make his camp on the river gravel bar, because that’s what BG did (not so great). He wasn’t allowed, and one can but hope that seeing his spot feet deep in churning coffee coloured water the next morning, with trees floating by after a night of rain, taught him not to trust everything he saw on TV.

I watched most of three or four BG episodes, but it it always brought on an attack of Tourette’s directed at the TV :rant:so I stopped.

My wifes comment during the one episode we watched of his programme summed him up in my opinion.
"He's a bit of a drama queen, isn't he?"
