A work colleague mentioned to me that following Hurricane Melissa devestating the infrastucture in Jamaica her family are struggling to get fresh drinking water. They can get bottled water but with it having to be imported and high demand it's extremely exepensive.

I told her about water filters for purifying and she's very interested in getting something for her family. I'm leaning towards recommending a large Millbank bag for pre filtering, a dedicated gravity purifier and for complete treatment chemical purifiers.

I've seen the Katadyn Gravity filter but what alternative would you suggest she might get in the way of a gravity fed purifier and what would you suggest for chemical treatment?

Does it need to be gravity? We've used a LifeSaver Cube, which requires pumping. Ours provides our water for hot drinks and water and has been used every day for over a year and is still going strong. (A small piece of plastic tube on the tap makes it easier to use).

Her family are a bit elderly and I thought gravity would be easier for them to manage but looking at the Cube that could be a contender for her as it's more robust than a bag.

Pumping is fairly easy, it is heavy though when full. You can fill it from something of course, but it is still heavy to move about.

I guess if it's a stationary setup, you could look at something like a Britisch Berkefeld, the Royal Berkey is a good size. Vevor also has a waterfiltersystem now. Millbank as prefilter is a good idea.
For chemical treatment, the Katadyn Micropur tablets are very known, or rolling boil if there's allready fire.
