i’ve been looking for a Barbour Durham jacket to use when out in the woods. It was a lighter jacket with an attached hood. Anyone have one or has used one that can discuss its suitability?
Hi Scoman I have the Durham wax jacket and find it is great for my needs. The external fixed hood makes it for me as it stops the rain and wind with no draughts. Fleece lining adds extra warmth.
Only grumble is no inside pocket which would come in handy for wallet, phone etc. Other than that I consider it a great buy.
Riven.
I’ve had one for nigh on 25 years. It needs to be larger than so-called breathable fabrics to allow air circulation and reduce condensation. I’ve had both the lined and unlined and the lined is the more comfortable. Mine has a small zipped inside pocket as well as the two outer ones.
Great for less active outdoor activities. I got mine for dog walking and fishing. Use it for active stuff and you will suffer from condensation.
Mine has been pretty indestructible and required only an annual re-wax.
If you can pick up a vintage one in good nick then go for it. The new ones are cr4p. I got a new one a few years ago and the stitching just fell apart. Like many companies we all all loved and revered, Barbour now aren’t a patch (see what I did there?) on the North Shields Barbour of old. Both my vintage Durham and Border jackets are keepers and will (and already have) outlived the Paramo and Gore-tex “must have” plastics.
LOL, I have the half the original tin of wax I bought when my Mum bought my Beaufort on my 21st 27 years ago! The last time I re-waxed it I was at sea with a great drying room to leave it in overnight. It might even be worth buying a cheapie hairdryer rather than go through the pain of grief having used her GHD's.
