I am after a small axe for trekking ect that fits in a day sack and can be used to carve ect ect, can't be silly money cause of "her in doors"!!!! Any one know which is best looking at £40 ish

My normal carry axe for light backpacking is the Fiskars X5 hatchet, which I believe is about £35 (mine was a gift). Lightweight for carrying, but a nice little hatchet and a good size for carving. Will handle small splitting jobs too, which I like because I prefer not to baton my knives.

Depending on how 'ish' your £40 is, maybe the Gransfors Hand axe (also known as Kubben), or a Gransfors wildlife hatchet. I have both and they are both excellent tools, but are around £60.
Another axe I have had in the past is an Estwing 12" sportsmans axe which is within budget. It was a great little axe, and I only sold mine on here a few months ago after I bought the Kubben.
There is one on ebay, they also make a slightly larger version 14" long.

3. Lighter. Handle is hollow so more % of a total weight is in the head. Where it should be.
4. Availability-every B&Q
GB are good but not 3-4 times as good as fiskars.
Size wise X7 is a perfect compromise for me but I take X10-small enough to use one hand and big enough to swing with both.

Why dont you search ebay or carboot for an old axe head and fix it up, loads of posts on here about axes that have been renovated. It would be more rewarding than some plastic tat! plus allot cheaper if your on her indoors radar!
I don't want to start an argument new vs old, but that "plastic tat" is actually a good piece of kit.

This is a good choice but an old picture the current ones are not quite a sexy looking though still work well. Edit appologies see this is now called camping axe where I am fairly sure it used to be sold as Husqvarna hatchet, this one below is the current Husqvarna hatchet

Pretty sure this camping axe is the same thing they used to sell as the hatchet in 2010 but now it's got a fair bit more expensive. See last post in this thread http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83054&highlight=husqvarna+hatchet
I do like the head shape aesthetically but I don't like it £20 more and it should cost no more to produce, I reckon folk just know they can charge that much for an axe that looks like a GB Wildlife Hatchet.
It was made by American Actor and Environmentalist Ed Begley Jr. It somehow struck a chord with me.
