My normal carry axe for light backpacking is the Fiskars X5 hatchet, which I believe is about £35 (mine was a gift). Lightweight for carrying, but a nice little hatchet and a good size for carving. Will handle small splitting jobs too, which I like because I prefer not to baton my knives.

Depending on how 'ish' your £40 is, maybe the Gransfors Hand axe (also known as Kubben), or a Gransfors wildlife hatchet. I have both and they are both excellent tools, but are around £60.
Another axe I have had in the past is an Estwing 12" sportsmans axe which is within budget. It was a great little axe, and I only sold mine on here a few months ago after I bought the Kubben.
There is one on ebay, they also make a slightly larger version 14" long.

I hope that helps.

One of the Hultafors Agdors? American style heads, with hickory handles.

Come in a bunch of sizes, and all less than £40..

Go for Fiskars.

1. Price-x7 or x10 will cost you around 30 quid, for top axe.
2. virtually indestructable (see the movie). How hard it would be to make a new handle for traditional axe in the woods?
3. Lighter. Handle is hollow so more % of a total weight is in the head. Where it should be.
4. Availability-every B&Q

GB are good but not 3-4 times as good as fiskars.

Size wise X7 is a perfect compromise for me but I take X10-small enough to use one hand and big enough to swing with both.

I don't want to start an argument new vs old, but that "plastic tat" is actually a good piece of kit.
Gore tex jacket, stainless steel knife, titanium mug, nylon tarp, syntetic firesteel. Why not modern axe? What's wrong with that if it works...

HUSQVARNA Camping Axe 37.5cm

"This genuine Husqvarna axe is ideal or outdoor life in forests and open land, suitable for most tasks like chopping wood for the campfire. The smaller design of the item enables a perfect fit for your backpack or to be attached to your belt by using the leather edge cover which is supplied with the axe.
The head is attached to the handle using both a wooden and a steel wedge for a secure fastening."

This is a good choice but an old picture the current ones are not quite a sexy looking though still work well. Edit appologies see this is now called camping axe where I am fairly sure it used to be sold as Husqvarna hatchet, this one below is the current Husqvarna hatchet

Pretty sure this camping axe is the same thing they used to sell as the hatchet in 2010 but now it's got a fair bit more expensive. See last post in this thread http://www.bushcraftuk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=83054&highlight=husqvarna+hatchet

I do like the head shape aesthetically but I don't like it £20 more and it should cost no more to produce, I reckon folk just know they can charge that much for an axe that looks like a GB Wildlife Hatchet.
