Long time listener...first time caller!!!
I just posted this over on British Blades... How you like!
Hi all,
I'm almost finished with this axe, just a final polish on the head and a sheath to go...
The head was found buried and completely rusted in my parents back yard in Lincolnshire, I rescued it and took it back to Australia and restored it to something of its former glory...I kinda like the pitted and rough look now, and it holds a great edge... I also love the shape of the head, and would be interested if anyone else has seen or heard of the make? I read it as "Smatcalda" and by the "GDR" I'm guessing German Democratic Republic? So maybe post WWII...? I've done some research but have come up with not much! Its roughly 800grams in weight...
The handle is Eucalyptus, White Box I think... Its modelled after the GB Small Forest Axe, but now slightly shorter at 18" not the standard 19". It was all shaped by hand from a section roughly 6" in diameter. Was alot of fun!
