I think it is just as important to remember the memory in bushcraft, Observation is part and parcel of remembering where you saw that little birch for tinder....

So heres an urban style comparison

When was the last time you saw?

A pair of red DM's.

A shiny silver zippo being used.

A bit of quartz.

Old and thrown away tarp, that could help a shelter.

A male wearing shorts.

A yellow leather accessory carried by a female.

Broken plate glass.

A tyre or inner tube.

A discarded or lost pair of gloves.

A cd, not in a house.

Discarded copper wire or similar.

An abondoned fridge.

Steel cable, discarded.

Lavendar flowers. In a garden.

Aloe vera in someones window display.

Fox track on street.

A bow hung up in someones back wall, from the bus.

A knife carried by someone, hidden.

A person walking down the street eating a tomatoe.

Skirting board scraps.

Bycycle spokes on the street.

Jerky sold in shop.

Kid carrying a screwdriver with obvious negative intentions, would you recognise him again?

Signs of someone taking drugs in a pub.

These are completely random, and in some cases made up. But I hope you get the idea that I am trying to convey.

I hope thats enough to get you started.

A pair of red DM's. I work in a girl school I saw a pair two days ago on one of the sixth form
A shiny silver zippo being used. In the pub two Sundays ago it had an eagle on it too
A bit of quartz. Hummm a while back when I was rooting through some boxes in the loft
Old and thrown away tarp, that could help a shelter. About too month age walking through some local woods
A male wearing shorts. Last week on our playing field
A yellow leather accessory carried by a female. Bracelet again worn by one of the sixth form
Broken plate glass. Down at the local spar last week
A tyre or inner tube. I have some in my bushcraft box
A discarded or lost pair of gloves. In the car park at work
A cd, not in a house. On the allotment up the road yesterday
Discarded copper wire or similar. In a skip I ride past on the way home
An abondoned fridge. On the strawberry cows advert if that counts
Steel cable, discarded. Small pieces in a bit of waste ground a walk past regularly
Lavendar flowers. In a garden. This morning as I left the house in neighbour’s front garden
Aloe vera in someones window display. Cant say I have
Fox track on street. Saw a fox last Thursday evening on my street if that counts
A bow hung up in someones back wall, from the bus. I don’t ride on a bus
A knife carried by someone, hidden. Yesterday an engineer cam to visit and had a leather man on his belt
A person walking down the street eating a tomatoe. Can’t say I ever have
Skirting board scraps. Can’t miss them around my school
Bycycle spokes on the street. Can’t say I ever have

Jerky sold in shop. Three weeks ago at my butcher and he sell biltong
Kid carrying a screwdriver with obvious negative intentions, would you recognise him again? Can’t say I ever have but yes I’d recognise him again

that wasnt a bad little exercise got my brain working and i'm actually quite suprised a can remeber as much as i have.

Good memory.
I am glad you enjoyed it and proved to yourself that your memory is actually quite good. It is unfortunate that so many people wouldn't remember half of it.

And hey lavendar at this time of year, wow, the last of our local gardens lavendar supplies died out about three weeks ago. Ever put it to use?

This is a great exercise! It's fun as well. Hope you won't mind me joining in :)

A pair of red DM's.
Not sure what these are, sorry!

A shiny silver zippo being used.
My mate Josh had one when I saw him on Saturday

A bit of quartz.
Pass!

Old and thrown away tarp, that could help a shelter.
In a garden on my training round.

A male wearing shorts.
About an hour ago, a friend of mine in a play.

A yellow leather accessory carried by a female.
Pass!

Broken plate glass.
In the skip on the other side of the road

A tyre or inner tube.
I'm staring at both now!

A discarded or lost pair of gloves.
Same!

A cd, not in a house.
This afternoon, I found a lost one and reunited it with its owner.

Discarded copper wire or similar.
This afternoon, next to a dismantled hifi.

An abondoned fridge.
Pass!

Steel cable, discarded.
Pass...

Lavendar flowers. In a garden.
This morning, on my training round again.

Aloe vera in someones window display.
Pass... not sure I've ever seen this!

Fox track on street.
Ditto...

A bow hung up in someones back wall, from the bus.
Ditto...

A knife carried by someone, hidden.
Do I count? Ten minutes ago.

A person walking down the street eating a tomatoe.
No idea! :lmao:

Skirting board scraps.
Ditto...

Bycycle spokes on the street.
Not on the street, but there are quite a few on the floor in front of me. I've never seen them on the street.

Jerky sold in shop.
Three months ago, when I asked for some.

Kid carrying a screwdriver with obvious negative intentions, would you recognise him again?
If I noticed the negative intentions, definitely. I would also watch him at the time.

Signs of someone taking drugs in a pub.
Sunday night.

It shows pretty well that my memory isn't amazing... most of the things I can remember are today, or at least in the last week apart from the really memorable ones (like the jerky, because I bought it. I may have seen it since, but not remembered). Instructive :)

Yeah its a good point, a bit like Kims game from Kippling.
I was thinking much the same last night when out with the dog and i clocked some clematis growing up a tree. - Ahhh that could be useful for hand drill hearths, but not as large a diameter as the stuff on the other side of the valley near the Yew tree grove....But its installed in my brain along with a million other such memories.
I think it is part of the art of bushcraft - knowing your environment and where to find things and the uses they can be put to.

Cheers
Rich
