I was out walking in the peak district on sunday with by better half. we decided to go and have a look at stannton moor, which has Earl Grey's tower and the Nine ladies stone circle. when we got to the tower we had a look round, there are some nice views. as we headed off to the stone circle, i spotted a tent and a hammok in the trees, and pointed them out because as far as i was aware wild campling was not allowed in the peaks. we crossed a stile i noticed a sign asking people not to take wood off live trees as it can lead to infections and the tree dying, i took this to be an ominus sign, when we came round the corner there was about 7 or so tents spread about, one a nice fetching shade of pink. several fires were lit judging by the smoke. and the all too obvious evidence of previous fires was plain. there was music playing out of a boombox. now this was 11am, so its not like it was a couple of people in a tiny two man tent who were packed and gone by first light, which i wouldn't have minded. its just so irratating that people do this as trying to tell people what you like to do, if they've seen that then they will put you in with the morons who were out on stanton moor, needless to say its an ancient burial site, and the stone circle was a religious device a long time ago. not that you'd believe it.

well rant over.

mods, please feel free to move, delete or whatever.

best regards

I have to agree with you, this is exactly the sort of thing that makes people generally and landowners especially, loath to let people on their land. We all want to get out into the wilds but there's a way of going about it.

It's a bit like the litter that’s left everywhere, it's a reflection of peoples respect of the outdoors.

I was up St Catherines hill in Winchester a couple of weeks ago, looked down toward the river and out of site there was someone camping - it actually looked a really good spot except for the fact that all their gear was bright blue and was spread over a huge area. Next day did the same walk, all the blue was gone but the litter was still there... really gets the blood boiling seeing that.

Up on Stanton this morning there have been two trees hacked down over the weekend (for firewood!!!???) plus some abandoned fires that were still smoldering. Like you, I find this absolutely sickening, all the more so because of the restoration work done last year to try to repair some of the erosion caused by fires actually in the stone circle. Unfortunately there's a long history of irresponsible use up there, including back in the 70s, a hippy reversing his van into the king stone and smashing it in two.

Oh dear, just another example of "I'le do what I want, go where i want, and **** anyone that says different". I come across this all the time, and have come very close to physical contact with a few. It especially sickens me to the core, about the nine ladies. Terrible, my sympathies go with you. :(
