"hidey hole / TEOTWAKI" stuff has as much to do with prepping as Captain Pugwash has to do with piracy.

That aint whut they telt me when Ah joined thayat murlittia!:AR15firin
Anyway - having worn the nickname "Pugwash" at various times in my life I am getting confused -... Captain Pugwash (me) does have involvement with prepping!:pirate:

No wonder they took my "Junior Rambo" Badge off me!

"Adventure not catastrophy" - I like that :)

Living in the country means that you have to be able to get through power/water/transport failures by having your own back up... life insists that you prep!

This is how we are, nearly all a supplies are multi use, like flour - can be bread - pasta - pizza base etc.

i think what most people are asking when they say "are you a prepper?" is actually "do you believe that society is about to collapse any minute leaving behind nothing but roving gangs of hoodies/chavs/zombies, and as a result of this you are currently stockpiling 22LR and andrex triple quilted toilet roll". no would be my answer to that one. however, if "are you a prepper" actually means "do you think that life could take some kind of unexpected twists and turns in the future, and do you think that by having a couple of months worth of food/fuel/cash saved up you would probably be putting yourself in a better position to cope with the unexpected" then yes, very definately, personally i think anyone who doesn't do that should probably start looking after themselves a bit better.

Oh yes. I have said before, I'm shore people will die of dehydration because the water stops coming out of the tap even if it was raining out side!

In South Wales a few years back ice storms along with freezing temperatures brought down powerlines and people were claiming for the contents of their freezers that defrosted ... - why did they not just stick the stuff in bags outside - where it was freezing...?

I'm thinking about investing in some gold or silver bars in case of financial meltdown.
Does that count as prepping?

Precious metals (unless you actually own stock in a mine) is neither prepping nor investing; it's gambling.

I suspect that in the case of a finacial meltdown the best items for barter would be those items people have a daily need for (or addiction to) such as cooking oil, cigarettes, alcohol, etc. That was the case during the Great Depression.

I'm sitting here now with the tv on the weather channel watchin Tropical Storm Debbie out in the Gulf of Mexico. I expect several more hurricanes before the season is over. If I'm lucky none of them will hit here this year. BUT! In the 23 years I've lived here 5 have hit. Electricity and other services are tango uniform for anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks. I can cook on my stove because I have gas (which has never been interupted as the gas lines are below ground) but usually lose everything in the fridge & freezer. Probably the worst thing to live through here (without electricity) is the lack of air conditioning and refrigeration. Think that isn't a big deal? Try to keep your diabetic meds from going bad without it; the scramble for ice is always a priority as is the scramble for gasoline (for portable electric generators and chain saws as well as autos)

I know you don't get hurricanes as such there but you did get at least one hurricane force storm when I was stationed over there and I saw quite a bit about snow and ice storms on the news last winter. There is ALWAYS something to prep for

erm....not entirely sure whether you're agreeing with me or offended by me there mate :dunno: as we've proven in the past, things often get lost in translation on the forum and it's a fair old way from the keys to the peak district (although similar in moisture content). i hope you weren't offended though, because i agree with everything you're saying, in fact i think we're trying to make exactly the same point in our own special ways. your concern with electricity/refrigeration/diabetes meds goes a long way to illustrate my point. you know you need meds and you know they need to be kept cool, so "prepping" for you involves ensuring the safety of your electricity supply, which is something that doesn't really feature on my list of concerns. on the other hand keeping a supply of gas for the portable heaters for use in winter when the gas has stopped flowing because the pumping station's no longer getting electricity, is kinda high up my list. prepping, to my mind at least, is being ready for the things that are quite likely to happen, not for the zombies over the hill :)

No, I'm not offended at all. I am indeed agreeing with you. And yes, you're correct about there being a difference in just what natural disaster we each might prep for and just what we might need to stock/consider; that's what I was trying to point out in my last paragraph.

And FWIW I'm quite a ways from the Keys too. LOL. I'm up in the panhandle.

Yes i do. Without getting to tight, the only"real" problem I think you would have would be someone nicking your gear as people seem to think their need is greater than yours. That's one of the reasons I like archery and make arrows, you can use them for so many things.......

It depends what you mean by "preppers" I keep a "bug out bag" next to the door in my hall for a very good reason. It is not of course the sort of kit you would see advised in any survivalist forum because it is based on experience, having once had to leave my flat with nothing more than the clothes I stood up in.

I don't worry about the social order breaking down, where I live it already has :)
